I’ve always loved it when people do house tours – I love being able to suss out aspects of a person’s personality by seeing fragments of their home, and, logistically speaking it’s waaaay easier than skulking around at night peering in windows.
(Not that I do that.)
I’ve meant to do this since we moved into this little place, and each time I was ready to do it I would grab my camera (by which I mean my phone) and then it would be like, “Oh! My floor is covered in blueberries! Fantastic!”
But over the span of a week I managed to cobble together enough photos that you can get a sense of this space…Behold! Our home, in bits and pieces. These are the views that make me smile.

My family gave me this antique rolltop desk as a housewarming gift when we moved in. I went to Value Village a few weeks ago and got the makings of a gallery wall for above my desk. I still need to fill a few of the frames, and I’m not sure whether I’ll paint them all one colour or leave them as is… OMG STAY TUNED

ONE bookcase! I can’t remember the last time I had just one bookcase! The buit-in’s beside the fireplace helped 🙂

When my book was published my family came up to celebrate, and my sister Lizzie painted this canvas of the cover. The best.

My room, with recently repainted dresser.

I have a bit of a sex mirror situation. I did NOT put those there. But there they are! Curtains? A mural? Wallpaper? Something must be done. In the meantime…fuck perfect!

My little buddy, immortalized in Instagram shots. This is the hallway that will mortify her when she grows up. I can’t wait!

Our backyard
And there you have it! Poor quality phone photos of Maison Madeleine!
When we first moved in here in early April, I was apprehensive. I was nervous about this huge decision I was making for Olive and I and worried it wouldn’t be the right one, for many different reasons. But it was right. Being here has been incredibly healing. My sister Lizzie and her fiance Eric rent the other half of the house and having her a shout away has been so helpful – it’s like training wheels for being on my own.
I feel incredibly lucky to be here, both literally and metaphorically. It’s amazing how much can change in just a few months.
Edited to Add: Wondering where I got some strange thing you saw in this home tour? Sources for things in our home can be found here!

Thank you! So lovely and cozy! The runner is awesome- perfect start to your future kilim collection!
I will be a kilim hoarder in no time!
I think I see hair rollers in the picture of the painted canvas. 😉
Haha! I WISH I was retro enough to rock some hair rollers! Probably just a big ole topknot! I appreciate your sleuthiness, though – I totally do the same thing 😉
It seems you have a taste for a soft, warm palette. It’s lovely. Congratulations.
Merci, Walter 🙂
Your home looks lovely! I think curtains would be really cool to cover up the “sex mirrors”. Although, I mean, SEX MIRRORS! lol Definitely a talking point for the house.
First the sex attic, now the sex mirrors! I am a lucky woman! Hahaha! Curtains would be gorgeous…very soft! I will update…
There is a theme going on for sure lol
Lots of charm. I love it! Sex mirror is awesome. Maybe a cute boho tapestry would hide it nicely.
That’s what I was thinking initially too, but the mirrors are centered on the wall and my bed is off-centered… and the thought of tapestry that doesn’t line up with my bed kind of makes me twitchy…that’s normal, right?
Gaw-ge-ous! But where is the kitchen with perfect avocado green bench tops?
I totally forgot the kitchen! Can you tell I am extremely invested in the culinary arts? I think I will update the post with sources for things, too….stay tuned!
You have a beautiful home Madeleine! Thank you for sharing 🙂
I love Olive’s bed!!! Where did you get it? We are currently looking for a bed option for our daughter – one that is not plastic seems hard to find unfortunately 🙁
As always, reading your post was a highlight of my day!
You are so lovely – thank you! I found Olive’s bed secondhand on Kijiji – I just looked on it to see if I could find a manufacturer’s stamp but I couldn’t find anything 🙁 Troll the secondhand sites and hopefully you can find one! I was planning on painting hers, but I’ve sort of fallen in love with it as is!

I LOVE the simplicity of your home-makes me really want to buy your book because you obviously live by this principle! Is that Olive in a bear suit in one of those pictures?? My son has this adorable little snow suit that looks JUST like that, and he was just wearing it when we went camping last weekend…I really had to do a double take when I saw it (if you were to follow me on Instagram-mkdeboer24- you would see him in it and I bet it would elicit a gasp from you because of the similarity! hehehe).
Yes! It is her in a bear snowsuit she used to have..this is the original photo https://instagram.com/p/WD2Bu3p_5H/?taken-by=sweet.madeleine
I requested to follow you – I have a soft spot for babies in bear suits!!
xoxo
Love the look of all of it! You’ve done a great job! Although if I were a man that you brought back to your bedroom (heaven forbid ) I would be intimidated by the wall art which I would assume was telling me to ‘fuck perfect(ly)’. It would feel like a lot of pressure…
Haha! I can see how that interpretation could be intimidating – I mean between that and the mirrors…yikes!
