A little while ago I started toying with the idea of running a weekly series where I would offer simple ideas for giving each room in your house a green makeover. I posted the idea on the Sweet Madeleine Facebook page and received an overwhelmingly positive response ( I love it when you guys are as excited about things as I am!)
Anyway, in my spare moments over the past few weeks I’ve been working hard at putting it all together, and I think we are almost ready to roll- the Green House Series will begin next week!
If you missed the initial post and are wondering what in the hell I am babbling about, here’s the basic idea:
Beginning is the hardest part. Of anything. We all know we should be more Eco-friendly, but it’s usually lingering somewhere toward the bottom of your to-do list, and even if you’ve taken the first step and read my book you still might be stuck on where to start.
Well, what if all you need is an Internet Blog to remind you what to do every week? Or a strange pseudo-hippie lady to yammer instructions at you until you get shit done?
Guys, this is that Internet Blog! I am that strange pseudo-hippie lady!
I’m hoping that this series will be able to break down that onerous and vague “go green” task into small, easily achievable chunks.
The first post will go up next week, and it will outline the posting schedule, concept, and the best part – a full ingredient list.
Why is this the best part? Well, because we’re all pretty busy and there’s nothing worse than finally finding the time and motivation to try out a recipe for a homemade cleaning product or face scrub, only to realize you’re missing one crucial ingredient. This first post will provide a full list of every ingredient you’ll need to make every recipe posted during the Green House series. You take an hour to shop once in the beginning, and you’re done!
The other great part of this series is that it’s not an exhaustive list of every single thing you could do in each room to make it more Eco-friendly. Why? Well, because I don’t want you exhausted, I want you inspired.
This was something I had to adjust as I created the post content because I’ve discovered so many cool Eco-friendly alternatives over the past eight years that it’s really tempting to just share everything! Options, man!
But too many choices lead to people making no choice, so instead of going balls deep and writing 2000 words about each room (which I could, because lord knows I love nothing more than a good ramble) I am going to do my best to keep each post short and sweet at around 500 words, comprised of four main focus areas (with just a little room for rambling, because obviously):
- What to Phase Out
- What to Bring In
- 1-2 Recipes
- Extra Credit
I’ll explain these a little more in the first post next week, but basically in each room I’ll be suggesting a few products you could be phasing out, what to bring in and use in their place, providing one or two simple recipes, and then offering a super weird extra credit assignment for the hardcore hippies among us who want to go the extra mile (yoni wipes, anyone?)
So! Are you excited? I’m excited! I even got really legit with this whole thing and made a graphic. I am not messing around, y’all.
Please feel free to share, pin, or tweet the link to this series for anyone you think might like to follow along and get a little more green in their life. And, if you haven’t already, you can “Like” the Sweet Madeleine facebook page to stay up to date with recent posts. (Some people have told me that they don’t see my posts pop up in their newsfeeds – it helps if you occasionally “like” individual posts so that the Facebook algorithm knows you want to continue seeing them.)
So, start getting your vinegar and baking soda ready, guys- we are DOING this!
