We are almost completely unpacked and it feels absolutely delicious. I swear I was purring yesterday as I collected my clean sheets and towels from drying outside and neatly stacked them in my linen closet.
That’s just as good as it gets, right there.
Now everything is in that awkward in- between stage where boxes have been unpacked but furniture just sits more or less exactly where it was plunked down on moving day, and nothing has quite found it’s home yet. Adam and I are reliving our university days with our mattress & box spring on the floor (our bed frame broke and I’m waiting until I can get to Re-Store to replace it.)
It is functional, but not beautiful quite yet.
The one exception, the one room in the whole house that is almost completely put together belongs to Olive. All the things from her not-a-nursery have been unpacked and although there are still pictures to hang, it is such a warm, happy space that it makes me smile every time I go in there.
My mom has been here since Friday evening, she came out to help look after Olive while I unpacked, and my little sister Lizzie came up for part of the weekend too. Beyond how scrumptious it was to see them, I mean look, I just can’t say enough about how incredible it feels to fill this house with the people I love.
(To say nothing of the fact that my mom whisks Olive away first thing every morning and lets me sleep in. No word of a lie, the way to my heart is through sleep. 100%)
At this point I want to do so many little updates to this house, nothing huge but little things, tiny things really. Adam tries to rein me in reminding me that we agreed to give it some time before we started any projects, that we want to live in the house to see how we use each room before making any changes, but every day he gets home from work and I’m standing there frothing at the mouth and shouting:
“GLOSSY RAILINGS! TAKE DOWN THE AWNINGS! MODERN HOUSE NUMBERS! A FENCE FOR GUS! CLOTHESLINE! COMPOST!OPEN BOOKSHELF! PAINTED TRIM! PAINTED WALLS! NEW CUPBOARD HARDWARE! PLANT PEONIES!”
And he’s all “But Madeleine we agre-”
“-PICTURE FRAMES! PETITE CLAWFOOT TUB PAINTED NAVY! OMBRÉ CURTAINS! DESK MADE FROM A DOOR!”
So I don’t know what your marriage is looking like these days but all interactions with my husband have basically been reduced to shrieking Pintrest pins at him until his eyes glaze over and he goes back to playing Clash of Clans.
To remedy this, I am going to start trying to attempt to rein myself in. With self-control.
Like a LADY.
I am going to exercise patience and restraint, and WAIT to do things.
Just like we agreed!
(For a little while, at least.)

I don’t blame you! So much fun to have a house that’s all your own with so much character that you’re inspired to spruce it up and make it “you.” Can’t wait to see what you end up doing 🙂
This cracked me up. Congrats on the new home, familia madeleine!
Thank you!!
When I lived in the country, I hung my clothes outside to dry. Not only did they smell so good (is that the smell of sunshine???), pre-digital photography I would sometimes take pictures because it looked so beautiful, the colors and and patterns like stained glass fluttering in the breeze. I am now feeling inspired to get a clothes line where I live now.
